When I was a kid growing up in Northern Ireland, I was given a viola aged 8 and started playing in my school orchestra. I went to the Tuesday evening little-kid orchestra in the nearby music center. Aged 11, this progressed to a Saturday morning junior orchestra, later intermediate, and then senior orchestra. I went on tour to France & Germany as a high schooler. Throughout, I had a caring, weekly mentor in viola, piano, and theory/composition. Everyone deserves a good music education.

Growing up in Northern Ireland, this was all paid for by the local educational authority. I went on to study a music degree, and masters degrees in music education and choral conducting. I taught and led music programs in the UK, Malaysia, New York and San Francisco for 20 years, formed a startup to elevate musical literacy, and three nonprofits.

With more access to music education, and local government funding music education programs adequately, this can have a profoundly positive impact on people and communities.
